SEONGJUSA TEMPLE - Changwon

Seongjusa temple is located at the foot of northwest of Bul-Mo Mountain(literally, mother of Buddha) which has the legend that The empress Her of The King Kim Su Ro - the founder of Kaya kingdom - sent all of their seven sons to the mountain and made all of them become Buddhist monks. From now 1,100 years ago, at the time of the King Hung dok of Shilla, as Venerable Mu-yerm defeated Japanese pirate raiders by power of Dhamma, the king appointed him as a most reverend priest of the kingdom and made build the temple(AD 835) for rewarding his meritorious service, and named the temple as Seongjusa (temple for Saints).

Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, and it was reconstructed on the period of Suk-Jong and Sun-Joe King. According to a legend, at that time, several bears having appeared and moved the lumbers which are being piled up in order to reconstruct the burnt temple up at the present place during the night, because of such legend, the temple is popularly known as Gom Jeol(bare temple).
