UNDERSEA TUNNEL - Tongyeong City
A concrete undersea tunnel, 483 meters long, 5 meters wide and 3.5 meters high, is the first of its kind in Asia that took 1 year and 4 months to built from 1931 to 1932. The Chinese inscription on the keystone of its arched entrance, ‘Yongmundaryang,’ is translated as “the Dragon Gate Leading the Way from the Continent to the Island.”

Thanks for sharing these pix of the Chungmu undersea tunnel. In 2001 I visited friends in Chinhae and one of them drove me to the costal fishing village where we boarded a boat for Hansan Island. I almost missed the boat on return when a Korean man stopped me and asked if I wished to purchase a biography of Admiral Yi Sun Shin. Of course I bought the book and have never regretted it. Returning to the shore, my friend and I walked to the tunnel area, through it, and back. I'm a serious collector of pre-1960 Korean picture postcards and have a 1930s card depicting the tunnel entrance. It would be a pleasure to hear from others from around the world with similar interests. Dr. James Lewis Lowe, USA - PostcardClassics@juno.com
